Double Trouble - Two Orphaned Badger Cubs at Secret World

Tecni-Cable has announced that it is sponsoring and supporting local charity, Secret World Wildlife Rescue. Secret World is the obvious sponsorship choice for Tecni-Cable, due to its close proximity to the company, coupled with the Tecni-Cable team’s passion for wildlife and outdoor living.

Secret World was founded in 1992. The centre cares for over 4,000 injured and orphaned wildlife in which its main aim is to return animals back into the wild and give them a second chance. The centre is unique as it provides the only 24/7 365 rescue service in the south west  however it receives no government funding so relies upon public donations and the support of local businesses such as Tecni-Cable. Tecni-Cable will be making a monthly contribution to help finance Secret World’s work, but is keen to extend the relationship even further by providing support and awareness through regular fundraising events, as well as additional help and assistance behind thescenes.

TrevorHeyworth, Managing Director at Tecni-Cable says: “As a local company, we feel it’s important to support the good work being done by this excellent, but under-funded local charity. Having grown up in the South West, the conservation of wildlife is a subject close to our hearts, and Tecni-Cable will be doing everything it can to help Secret World raise the funds needed to continue its work."

Debbie O’Keefe from Secret World says: “We are delighted that Trevor and his team have chosen our charity as we struggle to raise the daily running costs of £1300. Tecni-Cable has already visited Secret World, and has seen first-hand some of the wonderful work that we do at our centre. We are looking forward to working with them this year and are extremely grateful for their support."

Tecni-Cable supply satellite tracking attachments for leatherback turtles

Satellite transmitter being attached to a female leatherback sea turtle at Mayumba National Park,
Gabon (Equatorial West Africa) using Tecni-Cable pressing tool.

Tecni-Cable are used to dealing with complex and unusual assembly projects, but one of their latest projects certainly proved to be fascinating. Trevor Heyworth, Managing Director takes up the story.

“We were approached by Dr Matthew Witt of the University of Exeter’s Centre for Ecology & Conservation who wanted a method of attaching a satellite transmitter to the back of leatherback turtles so that their movements could be closely monitored around the globe. The usual method of attaching the transmitter to the back of the turtle was with a rucksack-like harness, but the team wanted to investigate a more permanent method of attachment.

“We suggested the team use a 1.5mm stainless cable coated to 2.5mm in clear nylon fitted around the transmitter; the cable passed through two pre-made channels, front and back. The cable assembly was carried out on site using copper ferrules, pressed on using the new Tecni-Cable Pressing Tool. A small hole was painlessly drilled through the turtle’s shell and secured using an anchor attachment which held the apparatus on firmly.

“The satellite tracking project has proved to be a great success, with turtle movements currently being tracked across the globe. The information gathered will help to protect leatherback turtles in the long-term by reducing the threats along the migratory pathways that they follow. We were delighted to have played our part in this vital endeavour”.
